Quick Reference
Title
- The tag
(:title ENTER TITLE as name OR address:) creates the page's title, which may be different from its name.
- Type in what you want the page's title to display as.
- If the building is known primarily by its address, for example, for a new page named 411 Main Street, the title tag should read
(:title 411 Main Street:).
- If the building is known primarily by a name, for example, for a new page named
EmmettJonesAndDoerflerBuilding, the title tag should read (:title Emmett, Jones & Doerfler Building:). Use proper spaces and punctuation, as these are not included in the page's name.
Photo
Location
- Unless you want to add location information in addition to the street address, i.e., "Building is across the street from Trico Main", leave this alone. You'll be adding location information at the bottom of the page.
Owner
- If you know who the owner of the building is, put the information here. One fairly reliable and official source is the City's Property Information database.
- If you're not sure, leave it out and make a comment later at the "Editorial Discussion" link for the building.
Physical Description
- A brief narrative sentence or two on the building's construction, i.e.,
Two story red brick house, Italianate style. Large front yard.
- This is not Current Condition.
Current Condition
- A brief description of the current condition, i.e.,
Vacant, boarded up, missing windows on second floor, chimney collapsing. At some point we'll be dating these descriptions.
History
- A brief narrative history of the building. Usually includes year built, architect if known, and social/cultural history information, i.e. "Primary factory building for XYZ Corporation for over 80 years. Over 500 fighter planes were built here during WWII". You can use brief excerpts or paraphrases (preferred) from other sources, with attribution.
Recent Events and Actions Taken
- This is where we enter important events or actions that have happened recently, i.e., not historical. Meetings, the creation of a support group, a demolition order or judicial stay, etc.
Other Pertinent Facts
- Here's where you put facts that don't fit anywhere else.
Links
- This important section contains links to external sites that provide more information. If you've quoted from another site above, put a link to that site here.
- Replace "ENTER LINK" with the site's url, i.e.
http://buffalorising.com/NameOfArticle
- Replace "ENTER TEXT" with the phrase you want the link to display as, i.e.,

Categories
- Tags starting with
[[! are category tags. All tags are listed when you create a page.
- Delete any tags that don't apply to the building. So, for example, you may end up with
[[!!Buildings]][[!!Buffalo]][[!!BuildingsAtRisk]][[!Watch List]][[!!Commercial Buildings]][[!!West Side]] for an at-risk commercial building on the West Side of Buffalo that's on our group's Watch List.
- Do not add new categories. If you think a category needs to be added, make a comment at the "Editorial Discussion" link for the page and we'll make a group decision about it.
Page Variables
- Tags starting with
(:SortStreet: Street0000Buffalo:) are variables we use to automate location/mapping display, sorting and some classification.
- If you're not comfortable with this section, you can leave it to the administrators. It would be helpful to provide them with a street address - go to "Editorial Discussion" and leave a note.
(:SortStreet: Street0000Buffalo:)
- This is used to sort pages by the street name rather than the street number.
- Replace Street0000Buffalo with the street address in the format
StreetNumberCity, i.e., Jefferson0455Buffalo or Pine0100NiagaraFalls. Use a four-digit street number and don't use spaces.
(:SortName: ENTERName:)
- This is used to sort pages by the building name rather than the street number.
- Replace ENTERName with the building name without spaces or punctuation, i.e.,
EmmettJonesAndDoerflerBuilding.
(:PRSAddress: ENTERAddress:)
- This is used to display the Location information above.
- Enter a complete postal address (if you know it), i.e.
3435 Main Street, Buffalo NY 14214. Use spaces an punctuation and include the zip code.
(:PRSZip: ENTERZip:)
- Enter the zip code as a five digit number. This is used to sort by zip code. You can easily find a zip code by Googling the address you entered above.
(:SortRank: 99:)
- Not currently used. Leave as is.
(:SortRankDisplay: 99:)
- Not currently used. Leave as is.
(:Version: 3:)
- Used by administrators. Leave as is.
(:Council: Common:)
- Replace
Common with the one-word Common Council District designation.
- Council district can be found at the Property Information database.
- If you don't know, leave as is.
- Council Districts are: Lovejoy, Fillmore, Ellicott, North, South, Delaware, Niagara, University & Masten
