Physical Description

  • The building of most interest on this parcel is the two story frame house adjacent to (extremely close to/built into/surrounded by) one of Rich Products' manufacturing plants.
  • 2 1/2 story frame house, simple Queen Anne or Shingle Style.

Current Condition

  • Demolished August 17, 2018.

History

  • Per Chuck LaChiusa, this building was the original office of Rich Products. Founder Robert E. Rich Sr. had his office on the second floor.
  • Per Brown and Watson, Buffalo: Lake City in Niagara Land, "It had been the home of John and Carolyn Butterfield Wells and, it is believed, where Wells and William G. Fargo met to form the Wells-Fargo freight lines."

Recent Events and Actions Taken

  • July 2018: Rich Products has announced its intention to demolish the house and the adjacent industrial plant.
  • From Preservation Board meeting notes 7-25-18: The Preservation Board recommended denial to the Commissioner of Permit and Inspection Services of the demolition permit for the house historically listed as 1145 Niagara Street on the basis that the house is likely to meet several criteria for local landmark status.
  • The Preservation Board found that the house likely dates to 1871, is a rare remnant of residential architecture along Niagara Street in what was once the hamlet of Upper Black Rock, and is associated with John and Carolyn Butterfield Wells and the Rich Products Corporation, Buffalo's largest privately held company.
