History

  • 1897 - Original PS 57 built
  • 1913-1914 - Current building built as an addition to the original, which stood just to the south. Architect: Howard L. Beck.

Recent Events and Actions Taken

  • 2003 - School closed
  • May 7, 2015 - "Congressman Brian Higgins just announced that the Matt Urban Center is receiving $1,360,000 from the Federal Home Loan Bank, with M&T as bank sponsor. These funds will go towards the revitalization of an old closed Buffalo public school. The Matt Urban Hope House will be an emergency shelter, apartments, and provide space for the Hope Center. Other Pertinent Facts

The present building was known as the “New Building” until the earlier “Old Building” was demolished in 1942. The “New Building” was one of the first elementary schools in the city to have a swimming pool.
