Current occupant is the Theatre of Youth. The building's in use as a performing arts center.

History

  • Constructed in 1913 by clothing retailer Levin Michaels.
  • Designed by Leon Lempert & Son.
  • First used to play silent films and photo-plays of Broadway musicals with a custom built symphonic organ for accompaniment.
  • In 1919 the owner installed a lavish stage and dressing rooms in order to attract the local theatre group, The Buffalo Players, and various national acts to the stage.
  • In 1985 the Allentown Association bought the property for a low price at the city foreclosure auction, reportedly outbidding someone who wanted to demolish the building and install a parking lot.
  • The Theatre of Youth raised money between 1986 and 1999 to restore and reopen the theater.
