Physical Description

Nine story steel, stone, and terra-cotta hotel building in Gothic Revival style, with a four story addition

Current Condition

Exterior appears very similar to original, other than the first level windows of the four story addition. Interior condition unknown.

History

  • 1902 - 9 story hotel built. Designed by Esenwein & Johnson.
  • 1923 - 4 story addition added.
  • 1938 - The American Hotel Corporation took over operations and did some remodeling.
  • 1945 - Purchased by Detroit investors
  • 1950 - Sold again
  • January, 1964 - In foreclosure and sold to "Delaware, Inc" for $110,000 with plans for apartments.
  • 1967 - Sold again.
  • 1982 - Hotel converted to 104 apartments (1902 building originally made for 86 apartments; at its peak it reached 250 hotel rooms).
  • 2007 - Touraine Apartments Associates purchased the building for use as income-restricted apartments.
